  • Insulin resistance

If you haven’t presented this topic before, it would be helpful for those who give short acting insulin injections with every meal. As I’ve gotten older (almost 50 years with T1) I find the action time to increasingly be unpredictable. 10 to 60 minutes to never, as if I never gave the shot. Obviously this makes timing of meals difficult. Doesn’t matter where I inject and I rotate sites regularly. Doctor has examined my injection locations regularly and finds no anomalies. Any insights for the ag... more

  • Finally!

I’m an RD/CDE and Type 1 spouse who’s not currently working and I love all the recent research and new products you highlight in your emails and videos. This is one more way to help me stay connected to the diabetes world while I take some time off. Love how you keep it light and interesting! But the intro music is way too long!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Breaking Down Gluten: Understanding Intolerance & Celiac Disease
Q: What should newly diagnosed individuals watch out for nutritionally when starting a gluten-free diet?
Gluten-free products are often lower in fiber and certain nutrients; initial management includes nutritional testing for deficiencies (iron, vitamin D, B vitamins, zinc, magnesium) and targeted supplementation as needed, while choosing naturally gluten-free, nutrient-dense foods.
Breaking Down Gluten: Understanding Intolerance & Celiac Disease
Q: How significant is cross-contamination for people with celiac disease, and what practical steps help prevent it?
Cross-contamination can occur with crumbs or shared appliances; even tiny amounts can trigger inflammation. Practical steps include separate toasters, dedicated cooking surfaces, and ensuring gluten-free orders are prepared without shared utensils or water that contacts gluten-containing foods.
Breaking Down Gluten: Understanding Intolerance & Celiac Disease
Q: What are the standard tests to diagnose celiac disease, and why is it important not to start a gluten-free diet before testing?
The standard workup includes TTG and IgA antibody blood tests, followed by an intestinal biopsy if positive. It's crucial to consume gluten before testing; removing gluten beforehand can lead to a false negative and make diagnosis difficult or missed.
Breaking Down Gluten: Understanding Intolerance & Celiac Disease
Q: What exactly is celiac disease and how does it differ from gluten sensitivity?
Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten exposure in genetically susceptible individuals; it damages the small intestine's villi and can cause malabsorption and systemic symptoms. Gluten sensitivity is a diagnosis of exclusion without a specific test, where symptoms improve on removing gluten but without the autoimmune intestinal damage seen in celiac.
Dexcom G7 Sensor, The 15-Day Sensor, and What to Expect from G8 with CEO Jake Leach
Q: Can you discuss the upcoming 15-day sensor and the expected features?
The 15-day sensor will offer extended wear life, improved accuracy, and additional software updates for insulin dosing management.
