The Shmuz Live 309: Be Holy, You're a Jew
Q: What is the practical path to being holy—simply following the Torah or more than that?
Be aware of the two inner voices, listen to the neshama, follow the Torah as a system of self-perfection, and cultivate compassion and responsibility for others as an extension of personal holiness.
The Shmuz Live 309: Be Holy, You're a Jew
Q: How do you stop the yetsen hara from taking over when life is comfortable yet full of pleasures?
Recognize that you cannot erase needs, but you can choose whether things in life are tools or masters; use them to propel growth and keep Shabbat and Torah in the foreground, while keeping the rider (the soul) in control.
The Shmuz on the Parsha: Behar Bechukosai: Din and Rachamim
Q: How should we view the deaths of young people or tragedies in light of free will and divine decree?
There are two levels to consider: the klal (community) message which may be clear, and the yachid (individual) who dies; while responsibility for physical outcomes lies with human actions, Hashem's overarching plan and mercy may still operate, so we cannot fully judge or understand each individual fate, and mercy can alter the judgment in many cases.
The Shmuz on the Parsha: Behar Bechukosai: Din and Rachamim
Q: Why would people in ancient times live so long if the goal was just to complete a mission, and why do lifespans shorten after sin enters the world?
Adam and humanity initially existed in a state closer to Gan Eden, where perfection was attainable in a more fluid way; after the sin, the world's structure changed, leading to shorter lifespans and a slower path to perfection, with our current bodies acting as a barrier that lengthens the growth process and creates the need for gradual change.
The Shmuz on the Parsha: Kedoshim: Holy Pleasure
Q: If one is dishonest or disrespectful, how should you respond while maintaining dignity?
Respond with increased honor and respect, avoid escalating conflict, and model the behavior you wish to see, which can lead to positive change over time.
