  • Not what I thought

I have been looking for a good podcast on history that helps explain some of the famous stories a little better but this was not it. Instead it’s just them putting their political spin on everything and that’s not what I was looking for. I just want to hear about the story not why you think all republicans are awful. If you love hearing why being a liberal is right with a little history sprinkled in this is the podcast for you.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The History of Golf w/ Tony Parker
Q: Dr. Parker, welcome to The Road to Now. Could you talk a little bit about the history of the sport? Where and when did it originate?
Parker explains that golf's origins are debated with claims from the Netherlands, France, Italy, and China, but that the game as we know it began in Scotland, especially around St. Andrews, with earliest substantial references by 1457 and royal bans that paradoxically helped cement its early establishment.
#364 Henry David Thoreau w/ Erik Ewers & Christopher Loren Ewers
Q: What makes Thoreau's life story relevant today, given the modern context of change and anxiety?
Thoreau's insistence on grounding lofty ideals in concrete action, his willingness to challenge prevailing norms, and his integration of nature with social justice offer a blueprint for thinking clearly about personal responsibility and collective action in uncertain times.
#364 Henry David Thoreau w/ Erik Ewers & Christopher Loren Ewers
Q: Could you talk about how Emerson's relationship with Thoreau began and how it evolved over time?
Emerson was immediately intrigued by Thoreau and helped him through college, becoming a mentor early on. Over time, as Thoreau sought his own voice and a different writing path, their relationship grew more complex and contentious, though grounded in mutual respect.
#363 What are America's Founding Principles? w/ Hans Zeiger
Q: What are the founding principles that Jack Miller Center focuses on teaching?
They start with the equality of all people, rights inherent to individuals, and the social contract; they emphasize reading and debating foundational documents like the Declaration and Constitution to understand the responsibilities of citizenship.
The Stone Pony w/ Nick Corasaniti
Q: Is it a misnomer that he defined himself at the Stone Pony, or had he already defined himself and then came to the Spirit Stone Pony?
Corasaniti explains that while Springsteen is closely associated with the venue, he had already built his career and was more connected to the upstage club.
