  • Is the show dead?

Great new show about a very popular game. RuneScape is getting so much content this year, lots to look forward to… but the podcast hasn’t been updated in over a month? I don’t get it. Didn’t this show just kick off like a couple months ago?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Inside the Engine That Powers OSRS - Principal Gameplay Engineer Mod Nin
Q: What was the process like for introducing new features when the engine wouldn't ordinarily allow it?
We typically spec out the needed feature, look for a clean design path with other designers, and if no easy solution exists, we rework the engine or add a new feature while ensuring existing gameplay remains stable, often using workarounds temporarily until the proper implementation arrives.
Inside the Engine That Powers OSRS - Principal Gameplay Engineer Mod Nin
Q: What made sailing such a uniquely engine-driven challenge?
Sailing required reworking many engine subsystems, from rendering multiple grids to new networking logic for boats, plus rethinking how to manage distance calculations and interactions on a moving platform, which was far beyond typical feature work and demanded a holistic engine solution.
Inside the Engine That Powers OSRS - Principal Gameplay Engineer Mod Nin
Q: Can you explain what a game engine is for players who might not understand the term?
A game engine is the bedrock technology that enables a game to boot, render worlds, draw UI, and provide interactive capabilities; RuneTech is the customized engine built for RuneScape, designed specifically to support its server and client communication, rendering, and gameplay systems.
The Art of Old School RuneScape - Concept Artist Mod Jerv
Q: What makes Old School RuneScape's art style distinct, and how do you maintain it across new content?
The style is kept lean and design-driven—focus on core design fundamentals, not over-rendering—while balancing nostalgia with the practicalities of an older engine and limited tools. Collaboration across design, 3D, and animation ensures new content feels cohesive with the established look, even when pushing for bigger, more ambitious visual moments.
We Met The Real Odablock!
Q: What role does your community play in your career, and what values do you want to instill?
He stresses blunt honesty, family-centered values, supporting his wife and kids, and maintaining a respectful but candid approach with viewers.
