  • Finally!

While I have only two episodes in, Michael does an excellent job in delivering the material in a clear and useful manner. And even though the recent episode was on beginners in carving, I found it also very useful as a 20+ year carver. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Reality of Learning Woodcarving | Bill Wolford
Q: How did you first get started with carving?
During the pandemic I ordered a small rough-out knife and tried carving when there was nowhere else to go. I started with simple ideas, then discovered carving lets me make whimsical figurines, which I found truly satisfying.
A Little Whimsy in Every Cut: A Conversation with Tom Par
Q: Can you share a bit about the shift to video content and what you hope to teach in future tutorials?
I'm building a base of characters with a calm, ASMR-style video approach; if it gains traction, I'll add tutorials and patterns to help others replicate the process, while continuing to explore storytelling through carved worlds and characters.
A Little Whimsy in Every Cut: A Conversation with Tom Par
Q: What role does planning versus improvisation play in your process?
Planning is essential to set a direction, but I also allow room for the piece to evolve—chips or changes can become a story element, turning a 'mistake' into something cooler that adds character and depth.
A Little Whimsy in Every Cut: A Conversation with Tom Par
Q: How did you start carving, and what drew you to the whimsical, cartoon-like style you're known for?
I started carving about three years ago after discovering a woodcarver on Instagram who shared playful, character-driven designs. I bought a cheap kit, experimented, and gradually found a style that combined my background in drawing and design with wood, leaning into characters and storytelling rather than perfect realism.

Q: Where can listeners find your work and follow along?
People can order from badgerstateblades.com, follow on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, and explore dealer networks like Chipping Away and TreeLineUSA to handle hands-on experiences.
