Coaching to build a Dance Career
Q: Can you walk us through or take us through maybe one piece of advice or something that someone said to you that made a difference in your career?
Two pieces of advice stand out. One is a quote about seeing the invisible to do the impossible, which reminded me to pursue what others can't yet envision. The other is feedback from Ree Gold to use 'we' instead of 'you' or 'me' when delivering hard messages, which helped me communicate more inclusively and effectively.
From Folk to Footwork
Q: What's the biggest life lesson that music has taught you?
Music taught me that a musical life can be communal and multi-faceted, combining artistry with family, teaching, and community service, rather than being a solitary pursuit.
From Folk to Footwork
Q: You're from New York originally, correct?
Yes, I'm from New York, and I moved to North Carolina seeking a different musical and communal environment that supports traditional, collaborative performance.
Dance Therapy
Q: What are some things that we can do as dancers? Like maybe before we go on stage, some tips or techniques to rid that anxiety?
Breathing with intentional pace, shaking out tension, and performing quick muscular releases help regulate the nervous system and shift anxiety into a more embodied, grounded state before stepping on stage.
Dance Therapy
Q: Tell us a little bit about, like, what is dance therapy? How does it work? And what should we be looking for? What can we do at home to practice?
Dance movement therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement and dance to support cognitive, emotional, physical, and social integration, emphasizing the mind–body connection and feeling throughout movement rather than focusing on aesthetics or technique.
