Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Employing overseas workers on Australian dairy farms
Q: What are some of the things that you might have done on the farm when you've employed these people to help make it a good experience for them?
Having two people from the same country helps the new workers settle in better and providing on-farm accommodation is essential. Efforts to recognize and adapt to their different cultures, and facilitating clear communication are also crucial for smooth integration.
Employing overseas workers on Australian dairy farms
Q: Andrew, can you just talk us through that? So Andrew had to register to employ that person, so if Andrew hadn't been registered, he would not have been able to employ that overseas worker. Can you elaborate?
Yes, without the standard business sponsorship or a labor agreement approval, Andrew would not be able to employ the overseas worker. Once registered, he can nominate overseas workers for the positions needed on his farm.
Employing overseas workers on Australian dairy farms
Q: Fadi, can you give us an outline of the visas that are available that enable us to employ staff from overseas?
There are two main visas commonly used for employer sponsorship in agriculture: the Temporary Skill Shortage (482) and the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (494). The 482 visa allows for four years of sponsorship, while the 494 visa provides more benefits and allows workers to bring their family and access Medicare.
New Season Milk Price Outlook
Q: What will be the pricing forecast for the coming season?
Prices are predicted to be competitive with some regional variances, but overall, it looks positive for farmers.
New Season Milk Price Outlook
Q: What's been driving this uplift in pricing, both from a local perspective and also from an international perspective?
The uplift in pricing is driven by a shrinking milk pool, improved global cheese prices, and competition among processors for milk.
