I discuss turfgrass management topics, usually starting with a blog post, sharing supplementary information, stories, and the reasons why I thought the topic was worth writing about, and worth reading about. Thus, a doublecut of these topics. This covers grass selection, playability, and all the work done to create a certain type of turfgrass surface.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

No rain, one boar, and 40 years of summer precipitation
Q: What are the main concerns for recovery if rain returns soon?
A timely rain would allow 80-100% recovery across the course, but without rain, drought stress on dormant grass could persist, so careful drought recovery planning is essential going into winter.
No rain, one boar, and 40 years of summer precipitation
Q: How do you think that's going to be for the tournament with all the dormant rough?
The expectation is that the course will still play nicely if irrigation is maintained; rough may be sparse, but patches of crane grass could help the ball recover, and overall definition between fairways and rough should remain visible.
Downward trend in OM2 and varying sand and N rates by green with T-Jay Creamer
Q: How do you adjust nitrogen on a green-by-green basis, given that you're separating tank contents for wetting agents and iron?
Nitrogen is adjusted by treating each green's GVX average over the past 14 days; the nitrogen in the tank is split so that only nitrogen gets applied when needed, with two passes on greens below target GVX and one pass on greens at target, enabling precise, per-green management.
Firmness, sand, and zoysiagrass with Stewart Naugler
Q: What maintenance practices are you using to keep the ball roll consistent?
Regular top dressing and regular maintenance practices are implemented, including verticutting and using the right wetting agents to maintain surface quality.
Firmness, sand, and zoysiagrass with Stewart Naugler
Q: What are you seeing in terms of the playability of the zoysia grass surfaces?
Stewart highlights that the playability is excellent due to the grass accepting low mowing heights, being able to dry out, and the density contributing to firm surfaces.
