Americans believed the Soviet Union was cut off from the West. Nothing went in. And very little came out. Yet, tens of thousands of Americans visited their Cold War rival annually. What did they find behind the Iron Curtain? It all started with a letter to Stalin in 1935. And when a Kremlin clerk opened it, there was a piece of shit inside.
Was the turd an insult? A way of saying to Stalin, “You’re a shit. Here’s some shit”?
Perhaps.
But I ended Part One of a Gift ... more

It’s Sunday, October 13, 1935, and someone, we don’t know, who mails a letter. It’s addressed: “Kremlin. To Comrade Stalin.”

This is a great podcast on the history of the USSR and on the ways that Americans and Soviets thought about each other in the Cold War. Interesting ramifications for other conflicts and the present day. Highly recommend!
I truly appreciate podcasts that treat their subjects like a work of art. This series plays with the listenability of Radiolab, the storytelling of This American Life, and the depth that can only be brought to you by the incomparable Sean Guillory.
This is a fascinating exploration of the Soviet Union through the eyes of an American visitor. Well researched and produced. The expert commentary provides helpful historical context. Highly recommend.
There’s a lot of good information in this series, but it’s not really about Teddy in any meaningful way. It seemed more like Guillory just wanted to use Teddy as a jumping off point to then go talk to experts about a certain aspect of something Teddy mentioned, which would be fine if the wrap up episode didn’t consist of a good 15 minutes of the host and a guest armchair psychologizing about Teddy and either blatantly misunderstanding or willfully misinterpreting Teddy’s recounting of his experi... more
2 stars only for Teddy's voice. If the podcast stuck to his story and putting it in context it would have been great. The host and other voices seem intent on rehabilitating the Soviet Union in comically misinformed ways. Don't bother with this one.
