  • Hard Pass —> Worst Tax Podcast

When one subscribes to a podcast to stay in touch with a specific topic, one expects said podcast to discuss that specific topic — this podcast constantly intermingles social justice political agendas with tax developments. Stay in your lane. If you want to increase your company’s ESG score, then make a leftist political podcast, but don’t mislabel it as a tax-technical podcast.

  • Tax code and economic justice

Ugh.... next time actually include some worth while context from the tax code. Reiteration of economic gaps in the population is a known and well traveled path of conversation... was looking for how the tax code influenced this conversation beyond a singular example in the first time homebuyer credit

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Side-by-Side Package Deal and International Tax Cooperation
Q: Monia, let me start with you. Could you provide a little bit more in-depth detail on the side-by-side Safe Harbor?
Monia explains that the package includes four interlocking components, with the side-by-side Safe Harbor allowing multinational groups with a qualifying jurisdiction to elect out of the IAR and UTPR, while preserving QDMTTs as a first charge; she also notes the US is currently the only jurisdiction listed as eligible, though not exclusively, and outlines the eligibility criteria at both domestic and worldwide tax levels.
How AI Bias Affects State Audit Selection
Q: What led you to start looking into AI and state systems?
The reporters became interested in AI's pervasiveness across industries and suspected that tax agencies would be considering how to pilot or implement generative AI, prompting them to investigate ongoing state practices.
The European Commission’s 2026 Tax Outlook
Q: Can we start by talking about windfall taxes and the reluctance you mentioned?
The commissioner explained that it's normal to assess a request for a new tax in detail and to check whether it is warranted and financially meaningful before any action is taken, with a recent example being the 2022 Solidarity Levy which raised around 26 billion but is viewed in a broader, uncertain energy-price context now.
Taxation in Outer Space: How Countries Could Vie for Star Power
Q: What is the central challenge in determining taxing rights for space activities?
The challenge lies in reconciling traditional tax notions of territoriality and residency with a domain (outer space) that has no fixed sovereignty, while considering that most space activity is not yet profitable and that revenue models may not fit old tax frameworks, necessitating thoughtful policy design.
Going, Going, Gone: The Supreme Court Ruling on Trump’s IEEPA Tariffs
Q: How did the Supreme Court resolve these two arguments?
The Court largely found that the tariffs were not authorized under IEPA by textual interpretation, and some justices would also have relied on the major questions doctrine to limit executive power, thereby ending the IEPA tariff regime; the decision was delivered across multiple opinions, with the majority anchored in textual grounds.
