  • Hard Pass —> Worst Tax Podcast

When one subscribes to a podcast to stay in touch with a specific topic, one expects said podcast to discuss that specific topic — this podcast constantly intermingles social justice political agendas with tax developments. Stay in your lane. If you want to increase your company’s ESG score, then make a leftist political podcast, but don’t mislabel it as a tax-technical podcast.

  • Tax code and economic justice

Ugh.... next time actually include some worth while context from the tax code. Reiteration of economic gaps in the population is a known and well traveled path of conversation... was looking for how the tax code influenced this conversation beyond a singular example in the first time homebuyer credit

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Trump’s IRS Lawsuit and Settlement: What Comes Next?
Q: What are the potential legal mechanisms to challenge the audit ban or the fund?
Challenge could involve standing, possible Congressional action to unwind the settlement, or judicial review if new actions are taken, but there are significant obstacles given the current status and the unilateral nature of some orders.
Trump’s IRS Lawsuit and Settlement: What Comes Next?
Q: Can you explain what makes the settlement structure with the $1.8 billion fund unusual?
The fund is drawn from the Judgment Fund but does not involve monetary payments to the Trump plaintiffs; instead, it provides a framework that benefits third-party claimants with a broad release, all created outside of court approval, which is atypical and raises questions about legal authority and proper procedures.
Universal Basic Income, AI, and Tax Policy
Q: What funding mechanisms are proposed if UBI were to be implemented in the US?
Proposals include payroll-style taxes or surtaxes, reforming tax expenditures, and potentially offsetting costs with changes to deductions and benefits, though consensus and practicality remain uncertain.
Universal Basic Income, AI, and Tax Policy
Q: What do marquee figures say about it and how credible are those signals?
Prominent tech leaders have discussed UBI as a response to labor market shifts, but the evidence from experiments is mixed on long-term effects and political viability, which tempers enthusiasm.
Universal Basic Income, AI, and Tax Policy
Q: So, why talk about Universal Basic Income now?
Because AI-related displacement plus a pandemic-era precedent have made policymakers more attentive to how a social safety net might adapt, including exploring funding mechanisms like taxes and credits while weighing political feasibility.
