Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Talking Aussie Books with Dianne Yarwood
Q: How did your own near-death experience influence your writing of The Wakes and Margaret, Are You Leaving?
The near-death experience reinforced the urgency and preciousness of life, pushing me to write with honesty about love, memory, and the choices that shape our futures.
Talking Aussie Books with Dianne Yarwood
Q: How did you approach researching the migrant and post-war experiences depicted in the book?
I spoke with individuals who lived through those eras, read personal writings, and cross-checked details to recreate authentic contexts while focusing on personal stories within the broader historical backdrop.
Talking Aussie Books with Dianne Yarwood
Q: What did you learn from converting a real-life figure's story into a fictional narrative?
Fiction offered a way to express emotional truths and moral complexities that pure biography couldn't, and I had to negotiate boundaries with Real Life Maggie to preserve both authenticity and narrative freedom.
Talking Aussie Books with Pamela Cook
Q: What are your main takeaways about the publishing industry, and what would you say to writers struggling to find a home for their work?
Treat publishing as a business and have a plan B (and maybe a plan C and D). Stay connected to a writing community for support, feedback, and opportunities. Remember that joy in writing should come first; commercial success is unpredictable, so find ways to stay engaged with readers and other authors, whether through traditional routes or alternative pathways like indie publishing and collaboration.
Talking Aussie Books with Pamela Cook
Q: When we last chatted, you were about to release your fifth novel, Cross My Heart, and you decided to self-publish after a difficult rejection. What motivated that decision, and how did you approach it?
I was devastated by the rejection after six years with the publisher, but I realized I still believed in the story and didn't want to lose touch with the craft. I immersed myself in learning about self-publishing—cover design, editing, formatting—and invested in professional services to ensure the book looked and performed like traditionally published titles. The experience taught me a great deal about the publishing industry, the indie space, and the importance of authenticity and ongoing learning.
