Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why early reading interventions are important with Faye Bankler Casell
Q: What should parents look for when evaluating outside-of-school reading programs?
Parents should prioritize providers certified in dyslexia therapy or recognized OG training, demand a structured, multi-sensory, systematic approach, ensure adequate baseline testing, and prefer in-person or hybrid models with clear fidelity to proven methods rather than purely online programs.
Why early reading interventions are important with Faye Bankler Casell
Q: Can you talk a little bit about what your research has revealed?
Research shows significant variability in school implementation of evidence-based dyslexia interventions, with many cases of incomplete fidelity and under-identification, underscoring the need for robust testing, stronger baseline data, and ongoing monitoring to ensure effective outcomes.
How to bring dignity and hope to youth in foster care with Rob Scheer
Q: What can listeners do to help foster kids if they cannot foster or adopt?
Volunteer in local programs, mentor a youth, help with schoolwork or extracurriculars, donate supplies, and support organizations like Comfort Cases to ensure each child has dignity, resources, and a sense of belonging as they navigate transitions.
How to bring dignity and hope to youth in foster care with Rob Scheer
Q: Why should people be concerned with the treatment of kids in the foster care system?
Because education and awareness can dismantle stigma and drive practical support, as many youth come into care through adults' decisions but deserve opportunities, stability, and recognition of their humanity; community involvement can provide the consistent, caring adult that many of these kids lack.
What you need to know about the IEP process with Vicki Christensen
Q: So for those people who aren't familiar with the IEP, or they've heard it, or they've even been in the meeting, what is an IEP?
The guest explains that an IEP is an individualized learning plan, identifying strengths and needs, outlining goals, services, and supports, and that it is a living, implementable document rather than a one-time paperwork exercise. It should be specific, measurable, and tailored to the student, with ongoing progress monitoring.
