If you love imposing “micro-aggression,” “cis” white male-bashing, “everything’s racist,” hyper-sensitized 21st Century culture on the 1960s & “Mad Men” (the greatest show in TV history), this is the pod for you. The level of cluelessness is elevated. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars is Annie is smoking hot. Not as hot as the Japanese waitress in “Flight 1” (S2, Ep. 2), but hottie hot (and a great voice) nonetheless.
If you think of TV podcasts as your "office" that you are going to go into in the morning and ask about how the TV show was and get a variety of takes. That's why I love SGB? This isn't listening to people who would tend to be in my ciricle, it's a take by female and younger hosts. What does 2022 think of Mad Men. They get it, they catch things. Not too much is gettin buy.
It's tough. On the one hand, they have really great dialog and observations about the legitimately fascinating character studies and themes in the show, and I love hearing about them.
On the other hand, they pretty consistently tut-tut and tsk-tsk and poo-poo the show and the writers when the show portrays instances of historically-accurate racism or misogyny, as if portrayals are the same as endorsements. It's exhausting having to listen to them criticize the show and writing team every time a ... more
This podcast is great if you love listening to 2022’s political buzzwords ad nauseam.
Crossing my fingers that they power through all the way to the end.
Annie, Melissa and Matt take their time to thoroughly discuss each episode. They often go in many directions (similar to an Advertising Agency creative meeting!) but somehow it all works out quite well. I highly recommend this podcast to both first time as well as re-watchers of Mad Men.
Annie, Melissa, and Matt have extremely thoughtful discussions about Mad Men. Each host brings a perspective that is refreshing and nuanced. They also sound like they are having so much fun with this project. I particularly enjoy the assessment on whether the themes and character notes hold up to modern day. When this pod drops I usually listen immediately!
The best way to do a rewatch podcast is with someone who knows everything and someone who has no idea where things are going. Excellent pod; makes me nostalgic for my days of casual adultery.
I’m also watching Mad Men for the first time during isolation and this podcast is the perfect debrief after each episode. Thorough, topical and enjoyable.
Matt, Annie, and Melissa are wonderfully thorough in this modern day Mad Men podcast. Introspection meets collaboration as the hosts breakdown each episode in a cohesive structure. My eyes have been broadened to different views on beloved and not traditionally liked characters. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a Mad Men rewatch/first watch podcast. -JamesC
Mad Men was one of my favourite TV shows, and I’ve had complicated feelings about it since the sexual harassment allegations of it’s creator, Matthew Weiner, surfaced. With that in mind, it’s been refreshing to re-watch the show with this merry cast of folks and hear how about a show set in the 60’s, aired in the 00’s is being discussed in the 2020’s (soon enough anyway). The hosts are genuine and bring up interesting points, the sound is good, and I think things will only get better! Whether y... more
