  • Great for music fans and musicians

I have not known most of the musicians Matt Perpick interviews yet each one has supplied a treasure trove of stories and material. I don’t even play the pedal steel but that doesn’t even matter. Great questions, great connections with each artist, and one finds so much satisfaction in each episode. Keep up the amazing work!

  • Great niche pod

I picked up an 8 string lap steel in the summer of 2024 and immediately started looking for resources to give me context about the instrument. Listening to these interviews has given me a lot to chew on and some great listening recommendations.

  • Keep ‘em coming

Thanks to the FJ crew for providing this window into the steel guitar world. Loving the variety. I’d personally love just a bit more tech talk (tuning, pedal/lever specifics, etc.). Thanks for doing this!

Travis Toy
Q: How have you established yourself in the Nashville scene?
I got my first gig by auditioning for a band at the Wild Horse Saloon after getting a recommendation from a player I met during a show.
Travis Toy
Q: What would a practice day look like for you then?
It would involve just working on any solo that I thought was cool or any lick, sometimes leaving a tape recorder recording the radio.
Chris Parker
Q: What can you tell us about your project "Guru Complex?"
Guru Complex is an improvisation ensemble based on my compositions and arrangements, allowing for a creative space where I can incorporate various musical elements and styles, particularly focused on groove-based music, and create a unique blend with the slide guitar techniques I've developed over time.
Chris Parker
Q: Where did your interest in slide guitar come from?
My interest in slide guitar developed from a fascination with the pedal steel guitar sound, which I've tried to replicate on a regular six-string guitar. I started exploring ways to achieve that unique sound, factoring in my musical background and experiences especially during my jazz studies.
Jeff Snyder
Q: What are your hopes for this and who would you like to see play this instrument?
I would like to see it used by steel players and experiment with what they can do with it; I hope to loan it to various musicians to get feedback and find out how it can be used creatively.
