Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#136: What is Master Data Management and Who Owns It?
Q: How does governance work in practice, and why is it important to separate lowercase and uppercase governance?
Ann describes lowercase governance as the day-to-day checks during data collection and entry, while uppercase governance is the formal, broader governance that oversees data quality and compliance across multiple systems; both are necessary for reliable data.
#136: What is Master Data Management and Who Owns It?
Q: So what's master data, and how do you differentiate it from other types of data?
Ann explains that master data is the background information necessary to run systems like ERP/PLM, distinct from transactional data which records specific events; master data underpins the value streams and must be managed across the full data lifecycle.
#130: How Product Data Management Was Born — And What It Means for AI Today
Q: What was that context like? Take us back to that and help us understand where we started.
The industry began with hardware-centric, end-to-end CAD/CAM stacks. As competitors emerged, the need to centralize data and control versions grew, leading to the creation of a dedicated data management discipline—PDM—and later to workflows and lifecycle concepts as connectivity expanded, setting the stage for PLM.
#130: How Product Data Management Was Born — And What It Means for AI Today
Q: But starting with some history, from your perspective, Brion, what was that start of PDM or product data management, right, the term behind PDM?
PDM started as a defense of the vendor's footprint, with Computer Vision creating a cabinet-level system to protect and centralize CAD data against competitors who were nibbling at market share. It was hardware-software bundled, a fully integrated system that dominated a closed ecosystem, and the branding of PDM helped establish a category that later evolved into PLM.
#132: Event Wrap Up - CIMdata Market and Industry Conference 2026
Q: What were the big findings in the PLM market this year?
Key takeaways included an 8.7% global growth rate to $87.3B, a shift toward knowledge management and collaboration, and the ongoing conversation about ROI and selection criteria, all amid a strong AI emphasis and concerns about data readiness.
