  • A bit of a let down

I really wish this podcast were better, because podcasts about the Premodern format are fairly rare. Unfortunately, I couldn’t even make it through one episode.

The hosts have a hard time staying on course, constantly cut each other off and talk over each other, and bicker like an old married couple, which led to an overall unpleasant listening experience.

In the episode I listened to, they also seemed to trash a popular new deck and talked pretty presumptively about how wrong some of the ch... more

  • Gold standard podcast

Fantastic vibes all around, can and do listen for hours in a row. Love the banter and hosts feeding off each other. Brilliant stuff, keep it up guys. And anyone taking any offense in any off Michael J.’s wildly amusing rants: you should know better.

  • The best Premodern podcast out there, and that’s saying a lot!

Mike and Lanny have a chemistry which you simply cannot fake, it’s only product of years of knowing one another, as well as having that camaraderie and mutual respect. Sprinkle in a healthy dose of comedy and sarcasm, and top all of that with Magic wisdom cultivated over a quarter of a century and it’s easy to understand how these two have managed to consistently create the #1 Premodern podcast. Sometimes they will talk about some specific deck or strategy, and seemlessly out of nowhere (and may... more

Loved how you guys switched from big picture to granular detail and back repeatedly. I may never cast another shepherd of rot in premodern again.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Quick HFEB Deck Tech with Mike Harris and Quick Update!
Q: What makes HFib distinct from other survival or midrange decks in this space?
HFib combines a misleadingly simple shell with deep lines that can win through multiple therapy activations and reanimations, reducing dead cards and enabling faster routes to victory while maintaining strong resilience against counterspells and disruption; the deck's strength lies in its ability to pivot from survival to a tight, win-the-game engine.
Quick HFEB Deck Tech with Mike Harris and Quick Update!
Q: Can you walk through the classic Xanadu Swarm with Hermit Druid line and how the pieces fit together?
The line uses Xanadu Swarm and Hermit Druid with Unearth to shuffle the needed creatures back into play, leveraging Karmic Guide and Shapeshifter to reanimate and stabilize, then using Psychotog as a cleanup piece; the key is sequencing therapies and preserving key pieces for the final combo rather than keeping everything in hand.
Quick HFEB Deck Tech with Mike Harris and Quick Update!
Q: What is the current goings-on in HFib and how does Battlefield's Ground fit in?
HFib centers on looping and reusing effects with Unearth and Shapeshifter, with Battlefield's Ground enabling deeper lines and broader matchup coverage, especially through Therapy activations and Gifs like Karmic Guide interactions; the approach has evolved to balance risk and reward with sideboard and main deck choices.
Interviews on the floor of Sacred Torch Showdown $3K
Q: What do you think of Lanny's Untappable Elves deck?
I think it's great; I would play four Wirewood Symbiote and just make sure to navigate your turns smoothly with it.
Interviews on the floor of Sacred Torch Showdown $3K
Q: What was your record in the Swiss?
5-1-1, lost against Mike Packer on Replenish, and I actually had a great run against Tarageddon; I've never lost to it.
