“凵”字始見於戰國文字，字形像深坑的纵剖面。兩側像坑的邊緣，下像坑底，上像坑口，指凹陷之地。远古人类以地穴为居，挖浅坑造房屋。凿地为陷，用深坑来诱捕野兽猎物。

“口”是人和动物发出声音的器官。人类从口中发出的第一个声音是嘹亮的啼哭，用哭声宣告生命的降临。渐渐地，口中能发出各种各样有意图的声音，会说话、会唱歌，有轻浅呢喃，有声若洪钟。每个人都想把人生中悲伤的诉说变成欢声笑语。口是用声音交流信息的重要器官。

“告”是把事情向人陈述与解说。除了向人说还要向神说。在古代，最庄严神圣的“告”是祭告，用祭祀的仪式是向上天、向神灵、向祖先汇报，并祈请福佑。
甲骨文字形就是祭告的仪式，上面是“牛”，下面是口。“口”，是祷告的动作；“牛”，是献给神的牺牲。牛在祭祀的牺牲中体积最大，所以以牛為代表。“告”是指古人祭祀时，在供奉的祭品——‘牛’的面前对神灵念念有词、用口祷告。当然，“牛”只是祭祀仪式中的祭品，其祷告的真正对象则是上帝或祖先神灵。
