本故事講述小熊傑克很喜歡吃蘋果，但是他住的地方沒有辦法種蘋果樹，於是他遠離城市，到野外去尋找合適的地點，卻因為沒有慎選適合的居住地點而遇到了土石流爆發。
在逃難之際遇到了好朋友乖乖和小元，於是三個人一起去請教貓頭鷹博士，得到了許多有用的土石流防災知識，以後可以安心的種蘋果樹，不用再害怕土石流了。

本故事以水保植物─九芎為主角。 它因怕癢的弱點總是被山林裡的小動物們捉弄嘲笑，變得沒有自信，然隨著山坡地災害的侵襲，他從反思中發覺自身的力量，變身成為拯救山林的「水保勇士」。
故事中與孩子談到山坡地災害的過程與樣貌、土石流發生的徵兆、緊急避難包的準備、預防性撤離的重要性等水土保持和土石流防災的知識。
