  • Learn before you talk

Endlessly frustrating to want to hear serious film critics discuss the movie “Queer” only to discover they don’t know how to pronounce “diffuse,” “Loewe” and don’t bother to Google the book they haven’t read which would prevent them from stating the book was “unfinished” and the filmmaker made up the part of the story that transpires in South America. Come on. It’s embarrassing.

192. How do you tell a story about healing from shared trauma when the characters can't talk about it?
Q: How did you approach the balance of genres to tell this Indigenous and queer story without losing its core emotional truth?
I started from the idea of oral and traditional stories with fantastical elements, then allowed the genres to serve the storytelling needs rather than dictate them, carefully trimming to keep the heart intact and treating genre as a translation tool rather than a checklist.

Elliott expressed a desire to explore visually rich, fantastical stories focused on female protagonists in future films.

Q: Can you tell me more about your collaboration with Helen Luvaur and crafting the film's aesthetic and look?
Elliott had deep discussions with Luvaur about every scene and shot, spending hours refining the visual style to ensure it matched the story's emotional depth.
TIFF 24 #10: Marianne Elliott on The Salt Path and directing for stage vs. screen
Q: What sparked your transition to film with this particular story?
The pandemic led Elliott to reflect on her career and realize she wanted to adapt a female story she had loved, which became The Salt Path.
138. Ghostlight: An interview with Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson
Q: I was wondering a bit about the origin story for the film, because I know in the press notes it said that you'd seen the trailer for the National Theater's production of Romeo and Juliet and that kind of sparked it, but I'm guessing there's like more to that story.
We had been in the pandemic for about a year and was feeling super isolated. All the theaters are still closed.
