  • Breaks my heart open every episode

So many cool guests! It seems like every episode features another favorite artist - or one who is about to become a new favorite.

This show is not only a consistent opportunity to break open my heart with beautifully moving songs, it is also a great education in how music supervision works.

I always learn something about the artistic development of songs while gaining an appreciation for how the soundtrack of our lives is curated by behind the scenes music gurus like Lindsay and Laura.

  • Sad Song Heaven

Love that we finally have a podcast that pulls apart the sad songs we all know and love! As a huge fan of both sad songs and music supervision, it’s so refreshing to hear these artists talk about their songs and how music placements have helped their careers. If you spent your teenage years making emo mix tapes for your friends and wising you could pick the movie soundtracks, this podcast is for you.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Driftwood Choir "The River"
Q: What influenced the structure of The River, especially the chorus?
They intentionally strip back the chorus to a simple line before layering vocal textures, creating a dynamic shift that mirrors the song's water-and-tlow theme and leads to a dramatic ending.
Driftwood Choir "The River"
Q: How did you two first connect and decide to make music together?
They met in Berlin through their label, had coffee first, and then began a journey that gradually led to collaboration, with their initial connection surprisingly based on shared life parallels and timing rather than an immediate writing session.
Nina Persson of The Cardigans "Erase / Rewind"
Q: What was it like facing press and public perception in the 90s?
Nina and the hosts discuss the male-dominated press environment, the 'ice queen' label, and the ongoing struggle to express authentic identity while navigating fame, ultimately leading to a broader, more empowering self-definition.
Nina Persson of The Cardigans "Erase / Rewind"
Q: How did Erase, Rewind come to be the lead single for Romeo and Juliet?
The song was already written and recorded as part of their Gran Turismo era, but the producers chose Erase, Rewind for the film because it matched Baz Luhrmann's romantic vision, making it the obvious fit for the soundtrack and helping propel the band's US exposure.
Ingrid Michaelson "Keep Breathing"
Q: Did it ever make you cry when you perform it?
Mostly no, because I try to be a vessel for the audience and keep the focus on them; I only tear up occasionally when singing if it reflects a personal moment, not for self-pity.
