  • Sad Song Heaven

Love that we finally have a podcast that pulls apart the sad songs we all know and love! As a huge fan of both sad songs and music supervision, it’s so refreshing to hear these artists talk about their songs and how music placements have helped their careers. If you spent your teenage years making emo mix tapes for your friends and wising you could pick the movie soundtracks, this podcast is for you.

  • What a happy accident

Forget how I stumbled across this pod, but I’m another sad-music queen. I’ve found my people! Keep up the great interviews, please. (Tiny quibble: It’s also okay to talk a little slower sometimes, leave some space between big thoughts. Just like these artists sometimes do!)

  • Very disappointing artist list

I LOVE sad songs and so when I saw this is was like YES! Then I saw the artists. I listen to ZERO. Can u guys do anything not recent?! There are SO many better sad songs than this and plenty of those artists are alive to talk about them.

  • Awesome podcast

Genius concept, brilliant execution. Laura and Lindsay don’t just know music, they know how to get amazing musicians to open up and talk about it. Rarely do we get to hear about a song’s inspiration, creation and meaning straight from the artist themselves. If you love sad songs (or just music in general) you’ll love this podcast. A beautiful reminder about empathy, connection, and why art matters.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Nina Persson of The Cardigans "Erase / Rewind"
Q: What was it like facing press and public perception in the 90s?
Nina and the hosts discuss the male-dominated press environment, the 'ice queen' label, and the ongoing struggle to express authentic identity while navigating fame, ultimately leading to a broader, more empowering self-definition.
Nina Persson of The Cardigans "Erase / Rewind"
Q: How did Erase, Rewind come to be the lead single for Romeo and Juliet?
The song was already written and recorded as part of their Gran Turismo era, but the producers chose Erase, Rewind for the film because it matched Baz Luhrmann's romantic vision, making it the obvious fit for the soundtrack and helping propel the band's US exposure.
Ingrid Michaelson "Keep Breathing"
Q: Did it ever make you cry when you perform it?
Mostly no, because I try to be a vessel for the audience and keep the focus on them; I only tear up occasionally when singing if it reflects a personal moment, not for self-pity.
Mumford & Sons "Conversation With My Son (Gangsters & Angels)"
Q: So Marcus, you bring these concepts to the table and then what happens?
The discussion moves into how the group collaborates, with the song taking shape from a shared process where lyrics came quickly once the music and concept aligned, followed by further refinement with input from the producers and other collaborators.
Anna Ternheim "My Heart Still Beats For You"
Q: Do you find that working with other songwriters or like a producer helps you get out of the like, oh, everything I'm doing is shit right now?
Having someone by your side can open up doors, helping you along the way.
