戦後、日本の建築が最初に向き合ったのは「平和」でした。
丹下健三による広島平和記念館は、
ピロティ、ガラス、水平性を特徴とし、
「戦後民主主義の透明性」を象徴する建築として語られます。
帝国の時代から地続きのデザイン的要素を持ちながらも、
その意味を“未来への開放”へと変換した建築。
戦後日本の建築がどこから始まったのかを考えます。

戦前の日本で象徴的だったのが、
「大東亜建設記念式場コンペ」。
帝国主義のイデオロギーと、
神道的な権威を建築に埋め込もうとした計画です。
このコンペで、まだ若手だった丹下健三の案が1位に。
のちの“戦後日本の建築”を背負う人物が、
帝国の時代に何を考えていたのか。
