Ben Ali was gone, but the trouble with popular uprisings is there's not a lot of foresight. So how do you bootstrap a democracy when you've never really had one?

The final days of the revolution crashed into Tunis and onto Avenue Habib Bourguiba, but as protesters called for Ben Ali to get out, a dark secret was hiding just below their feet.

The Arab Spring is often called the Twitter Revolution, but who were the people behind the keyboard sending all those tweets? And, maybe more importantly, who were the people reading and acting on the calls to protest they saw on social media?  This ... more

  • A Historical Treasure

Listened all the way through in March 2022, and it’s still totally relevant. An illuminating account that captures the exhilaration of the revolution. The numerous interviews with a range historically important Tunisians were the highlight. Recommend to anyone hoping to understand the modern politics of the Middle East or the sociology of revolution.

This is my new favorite pod. The two hosts are both funny, engaging, but so smart and are a perfect balance for eachother. They are honest about their reporting while also working to bring us the most important interviews from those who were on the ground. Can’t wait for more episodes!

  • Love it

Fascinating and well-written. I didn’t know much about the Arab Spring or Tunisia, but after listening to the first episode I’m so I intrigued to learn more. Erin and Cyrus unfold the detailed pieces of the story, woven with first-hand interviews, in a way that reminds me of my favorite podcasts (Serial comes to mind). I can’t wait for episode two!

  • I didn’t realize the impact of the Arab Spring

...on so much of what’s happening currently and in the 10 years since it started in Tunisia. The hosts did a good job in the first episode making the case for why the experiences of the people in Tunisia who were there matter before it gets relegated to the history books. Super excited to hear the rest of the series!
