In the mid-2000’s a sound emerged out of the Bay Area that would overtake the sonic landscape of hip-hop for a brief but impactful period showcasing not only the music, but also the overall culture of the Bay Area. A culture that changed the way the hip-hop nation danced, dressed, spoke, and even drove their cars. The Lil Jon produced, E-40 helmed smash “Tell Me When to Go” accurately summed up th... more

The fiercely independent nature of the Bay Area music scene has proven to have both positive and adverse effects on the creativity and overall commercial success of the Hyphy Movement. In episode 5 of Remember the Time, titled, Is Hyphy Dead?, host B... more
Although E-40 is the mainstream face of the Hyphy Movement, Northern California residents view another rapper as the anchor of Hyphy. He went by Mac Dre. This episode of Remember the Time breaks down the larger-than-life persona of the late rapper—fr... more

This podcast series was so dope! It was cool to walk down memory lane of this era, while also getting some education.
This music/culture was so influential to my Highschool years and early 20s. I have never been a Bay Area resident, but the Bay influences have always been very prevalent in my hometown of Fresno, Ca.
Highly recommend to anyone!
I love the way this series educates & celebrates the Bay. Mandatory listen for anyone from the Bay.
Amazing work as always by Branden LSK. This needs to be a Netflix series.
This was a great introduction and history lesson on the foundation of Bay Area hip hop! Each episode continues to yield insights into a culture of thr U.S. that often is overlooked but contributed so much to Hip Hop. Ep 3 is a classic!!
I’m enjoying this podcast and learning about some of the west coast hip hop culture straight from the source.
Not knowing much about the Bay Area or the Hip Hop movement on the West Coast —Branden’s breakdown of Mobb music/Hyphy era was very inclusive, and relatable to the underground Hip Hop movements nationwide. His ability to attribute the contributions of E-40, Keak Da Sneak, Too Short, Hieroglyphics and even the Conscious Daughters to the foundation of the Bay’s Hip Hop community—was nothing short of impressive. I also loved how he made the comparisons of Mobb music (hard bass lines) being what Cru... more
