  • Fantastic!!!

The podcasts are all so interesting and the guests, as well as the hosts, have such great passion for the sea and all the creatures that live in it. I have a new application for protecting our oceans that now seem to me as a sort of underwater national park !!! I hope I will be able to return to diving which I have been away from for too long.

So interesting! Really enjoying learning so much about our oceans and the environment. I am not a scuba diver-in fact I am a bit afraid of the ocean- but listening to this podcast is opening my eyes to the beauty of the seas and our need to protect our oceans!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sarah Levy and Captain Paul Watson: Direct Action for the Ocean, The Only Flag Worth Flying | S5E3
Q: What are your thoughts on the High Seas Treaty and its enforcement challenges?
They acknowledge the treaty as a positive framework but stress that without clear enforcement mechanisms and practical implementation, it risks giving a sense of closure without real protection for the oceans.
Sarah Levy and Captain Paul Watson: Direct Action for the Ocean, The Only Flag Worth Flying | S5E3
Q: How do you view the role of non-state actors in enforcing ocean laws and dealing with ecoterrorism labels?
They argue that non-state actors, including NGOs and activist groups like Sea Shepherd, provide effective enforcement where states fail, and the legal crackdown on such groups often mislabels legitimate conservation actions as criminal activity.
Sarah Levy and Captain Paul Watson: Direct Action for the Ocean, The Only Flag Worth Flying | S5E3
Q: What is the core thesis of your book and how did your collaboration begin?
Sarah explains the thesis centers on filling enforcement gaps in international environmental law through non-state actors, while Paul notes their experiences with direct action and the evolution of ocean governance beyond state-centric models.
John Bohorquez: Financing the Future of Our Oceans | S5E2
Q: What makes conservation finance scalable beyond donor and government funding?
Blended finance that combines public and private sources, along with legal innovations like debt-for-nature swaps and innovative instruments, can unlock trillions by aligning incentives and creating investable assets tied to biodiversity outcomes.
John Bohorquez: Financing the Future of Our Oceans | S5E2
Q: Can you explain the concept of blue bonds and how they support ocean conservation?
Blue bonds blend public funding, philanthropy, and private capital to mobilize large-scale investment in biodiversity and ocean health, using use-of-proceeds bonds that fund conservation projects and can be repaid through ongoing financing structures.
