  • Great! But please one niggle

Love the pod but please can you stop with the little interjections whilst the other person is speaking. The small “yeahs” and noises are really distracting and take away from the quality of the pod. Other than that it’s great. Keep going!

  • Completely unlistenable

In the most recent stroke episode the host needs to stop saying “yeah” after every sentence the guest says. Just listen to his learned advice.

  • Very informative and engaging podcast even for laypeople

While I’m not a doctor, I have a keen interest for medicine.

This podcast is such a simple yet well executed idea to discuss real life clinical cases.

It really helps people (even the ones who don’t work on hospital wards) understand the pressures, dilemmas and ethical decisions doctors are confronted with every day.

I love the breadth of topics chosen, and the pedagogical approach allows people to walk through cases slowly.

    I probably understand 80% of what’s being discussed (as there’s a fair ... more

Episode 103: Modern Palliative Care: its Evolving Role, Individualised Prescribing and Honest Conversations at the End of Life
Q: How should clinicians approach conversations about prognosis and potential death with families?
Be honest about uncertainty, use ranges rather than fixed timelines, explain what you observe in the patient day by day, and invite ongoing dialogue; support and reassess with the family rather than delivering a one-off prognostic statement.
Episode 103: Modern Palliative Care: its Evolving Role, Individualised Prescribing and Honest Conversations at the End of Life
Q: When is it appropriate to involve specialist palliative care earlier in a patient's illness trajectory?
Early involvement is appropriate when a patient has a progressive, life-limiting illness and when symptom burden or complexity suggests they may benefit from expert input, particularly to support complex decision-making, plan for future care needs, and facilitate conversations about goals of care.
Episode 102: Alcohol-related hepatitis: Diagnosis, Management and Future of care
Q: If the patient has severe alcohol-related hepatitis from the first blood test, would you rush into steroids or wait 36 hours to assess trajectory and exclude infection?
Wait 72 to 96 hours to assess the trajectory and exclude infection, then initiate steroids for those with a favorable trajectory and no infection.
Episode 96: Weight, Wellness and the Mind: Rethinking Clinical Conversations
Q: How can healthcare professionals better signpost patients who face barriers due to their obesity?
Offer patients a broader view of rehabilitation options, including supportive roles of bariatric surgery and physical rehabilitation.
Episode 96: Weight, Wellness and the Mind: Rethinking Clinical Conversations
Q: What advice do you give to healthcare professionals when discussing trauma with patients?
Allow space for trauma discussion and consider arranging follow-ups to ensure the patient feels supported.
