Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Anal Cancer Series #4: Prof. David Sebag-Montefiore - The Role of Radiotherapy in the Treatment of Anal Cancer and Clinical Trials.
Q: From your experience, how do patients typically present and how is stigma addressed?
Patients present with a range of symptoms near the anal/rectal junction; stigma exists, especially around discussing anal symptoms, but there is a push to normalize seeking care and to address sexual function and long-term quality of life as part of survivorship.
Anal Cancer Series #4: Prof. David Sebag-Montefiore - The Role of Radiotherapy in the Treatment of Anal Cancer and Clinical Trials.
Q: David, can I ask why specifically anal cancer and rectal cancer? What drew you to this site-specific area?
I was influenced by mentors early in my training, particularly a consultant who was involved in pioneering randomized trials in anal–rectal cancer, and I saw how research in this rare area could lead to meaningful changes in practice by reducing the need for major surgery.
Bonus Episode: Dr. Shah Islam - UKIO President 2026/202
Q: Most exciting innovation up to now?
Most exciting innovation, platinum coils for aneurysm treatments changed again.
Anal Cancer Series #2: Claire Laverty - Lived Experience of Anal Cancer
Q: Did you know much about radiotherapy before they told you about it?
Clare had very little prior knowledge; she learned through a hospital video and the experience of starting treatment, underscoring the need for better patient education upfront.
E203: Dr. Saahil Mehta - Preconditioning and Prehabiliation Before Breast Cancer Surgery, Plexaa and Bloom43
Q: What are your plans for expanding Bloom43 to other surgeries or contexts like radiotherapy?
The guest outlines plans to test preconditioning before radiotherapy, expand device generations to accommodate different body types, and use Bloom43 as a research platform to explore outcomes beyond breast surgery.
