  • The like everything

Be more critical and think of your listeners who blind buy this stuff and not all the cool people from labels you want to pander to.

  • New people in the mix, same low quality

The new cohost has as much personality as tapioca pudding. The guests who aren’t directly involved with the industry (and podcasters who contribute commentaries do not count) fall between boring and actively grating. I’ve given this a chance to see if it would approve, but I can’t stand most episodes. There’s gotta be a better VS focused podcast out there…

  • Film Preservation at Its Finest

Great podcast that covers Vinegar Syndrome releases month by month. The only issue is the volume is so low on mobile earbuds, I have to max it out just to barely hear the hosts and their guests. Mix it a little louder, please!

  • Could be much better…

Occasionally has interesting guests connected to Vinegar Syndrome, but the host is not very engaging and the lack of knowledge shines through pretty often. Far too many physical media podcasts these days are the equivalent of YouTube “haul” videos, and a good portion of this one falls into that category.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 51 - August Announcements & Iconoscope w/Brandon Upson & Amanda Reyes
Q: What makes Death of a Cheerleader historically important beyond its immediate success?
It changed the demographic approach, showing networks that younger audiences could be the core while leveraging established adult leads, thereby broadening the TV movie's appeal and shelf life.
Episode 51 - August Announcements & Iconoscope w/Brandon Upson & Amanda Reyes
Q: Do you think there's a tie-in for Death of a Cheerleader being so successful, and did that influence later TV movies like Bring It On or I'm a Cheerleader?
There's likely a connection in how it demonstrated a market for teen-centered true-crime and coming-of-age stories that still respected the teenage voice, which influenced subsequent creative decisions and blueprints for Made for TV movies.
Episode 49 - Summer Subscriber Week w/Oscar Becher
Q: What makes Reviver different from previous Vinegar Syndrome releases?
Reviver focuses on educational, curio, and discovery-driven content—curated shorts and rare works that may not be commercially driven but offer significant cultural value, supported by fellowships and the Eastman Museum partnership to sustain ongoing research and restoration efforts.
Episode 49 - Summer Subscriber Week w/Oscar Becher
Q: What challenges come with restoring studio titles compared to independent projects?
Studio titles require navigating archivist teams, licensing, and often more complex element inventories, but with dedicated collaboration (e.g., Joe as acquisitions director and dedicated 4K masters), they can still be brought to life with high-density scans and careful restoration to meet modern presentation standards.
Episode 49 - Summer Subscriber Week w/Oscar Becher
Q: Why are there three cuts of this film, and what does each version represent?
There were three versions (the theatrical, director's cut, and a home video director's cut) pulled from the best surviving elements, including the OCN and interpositive, with adjustments to balance missing segments and to preserve the director's original intent while catering to different release formats.
