Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S1E2: Parenting from behind bars
Q: Can you talk about the concept of telling children the truth about your circumstances, and how to handle parts of the truth that might be hard for them?
It's important to tell children the truth, but in a protective way. You don't need to go into every detail for very young kids; you can acknowledge that Mommy made mistakes and that some things are complicated, and as they grow you share more as appropriate. Being honest builds trust and reduces the harm of hiding the truth, while pacing the information helps them cope.
S1E7: The Catholic sister-turned-activist against the death penalty
Q: What do you say to the argument that capital punishment deters crime?
She explains that deterrence is not supported by data, noting that states with high execution rates do not consistently show lower crime, and that the focus should be on addressing underlying causes and ensuring humane treatments and due process.
S1E7: The Catholic sister-turned-activist against the death penalty
Q: Explain why you are opposed to the death penalty.
Sister Helen Prejean discusses her firsthand experiences with death row, emphasizing the moral and practical failings of the system, such as its racial and economic biases, the artificiality of justice, and the harm to the human psyche, arguing that life with chances for growth better serves justice than state-sanctioned killing.
