  • Fave perfume podcast

This podcast is both pure pleasure and serious education about the industry. I could, and do, listen to Emma for hours a day while I work through the back catalogue (highly recommend). Emma is so authentically curious and also deeply knowledgable, funny, and just a sparkly delight.

  • A great way to learn about olfaction.

The format is deceptive: at the first listen, Emma’s demeanour and voice suggests levity and inclusiveness, which is all true. But the conversations she teases, supports and otherwise invites is exceptionally valuable for me. I’m an aspiring perfumer: and learning the equivalent of “how to walk” and understand the world at a deeper level with my nose.

I had to be out of town last week for a gruelling presentation. On my trip, I listened to Christopher Sheldrake’s interview which was incredibly... more

  • An absolute joy

I’ve been listening to Perfume Room for since 2022 and it is one of the podcasts I look forward to the most. Get ready to embark on an olfactive journey and learn about the stories, inspirations, and artistic visions behind the world of fragrance. Emma is an excellent host and attentive interviewer who knows how to ask the right questions and keep the conversation both technically interesting and broadly relatable. Plus, Emma runs an incredible Smell Club (it’s like book club but for fragrance!)... more

  • Delightful, accessible, and educational :)

Can’t believe I’ve never written a review, but I first started listening to Emma during the pandemic and found the podcast SO comforting and delightful. Despite being accessible and fun I’ve learned so much about fragrance from Emma’s interviewing and narrative skill. Highly recommend for perfume novices and experts alike :)

  • Come for the Perfume, Stay for Emma

Love this podcast. Emma is a first-rate interviewer—curious, informed, and genuinely great at what she does. If you’re someone who judges a podcast in a nanosecond based on the host’s voice (guilty!), give this one a real listen. I wasn’t instantly pulled in, but now I adore everything about Emma & the show. Settle in & enjoy!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

211. DR. RACHEL HERZ (Neuroscientist & Smell Expert) ~ Single? Let your nose pick your partner.
Q: What is the science behind why we find certain scents appealing or not?
Differences in olfactory receptors between individuals, combined with personal memories and associations, create highly subjective scent preferences, so two people can smell the same fragrance very differently based on biology and life experiences.
210. SONIA CONSTANT [Givaudan Sr. Perfumer + Ella K Founder] ~ The Real Life Ella K.
Q: What is your guiding principle as mentor to younger perfumers?
Her core teaching is 'less is more'—strip away unnecessary ingredients to reveal a clear, strong fragrance message, and then creatively add elements that don't yet exist.
210. SONIA CONSTANT [Givaudan Sr. Perfumer + Ella K Founder] ~ The Real Life Ella K.
Q: What drives your brand Ella K, and how is it different from your client work?
Ella K reflects Sonia's artistic vision without price constraints, allowing bold, time-tested fragrances that carry her signature while enabling her to explore freely and mentor others.
210. SONIA CONSTANT [Givaudan Sr. Perfumer + Ella K Founder] ~ The Real Life Ella K.
Q: What is Centrec and how does it work?
Centrec is a portable technology that captures scents from travel by trapping odor molecules in a filter and analyzing them in the lab to recreate the scent composition digitally; it enables Sonia to translate real-world smells into perfumes.
206. JANA MENARD [Fragrance Vault] ~ What Happens to Your Perfume When You Die?
Q: What are you wearing, fragrance-wise?
Jana describes the Infini reformulation (1971) by Gerard Leforte, highlighting its aldehydic, futuristic character with jasmine, rose, and a mossy woody base; she notes its vintage appeal and how it feels like an old-school French classic with a forward-looking edge.
