78歳のすみちゃんは、普段は体調が優れなくても、盆踊りの後は2、3日元気に動けるという。幼い頃から日本舞踊と民踊を学び、全国の踊りや、人物の悲しみや誇りを表現する難しい演目にも取り組んできた。しかし今は、何も考えず、ただ楽しむ盆踊りが一番だと語る。名前も住所も知らなくても、一緒に踊れば仲間になれる。年に数時間しか会わない人とも、長年の友人のようにつながれる。体調を理由に遠出を控えると決めても、誘われればまた踊りに行く。盆踊りは、すみちゃんに生命力と、人との平和なつながりを与えている。
39年前、八尾から枚方へ移ったすみちゃんは、近所の盆踊り会場を訪れた。櫓も提灯もあるのに踊る人はおらず、役員が小さく音楽を流しているだけだった。すみちゃんが母と友人と踊り始めると、翌年から少しずつ人が集まり、婦人会や子ども会も参加。元暴走族の若者たちも子どもに踊りを教え、10年以上かけて会場はにぎわった。すみちゃんにとって、最初に踊ることは勇気ではない。「踊りたいから踊る」。その一歩が人を呼び、世代を越えるつながりを生んだ。
