I absolutely enjoyed this episode. Going into the thoughts of the writer is always a treat. The discussion was enlightening and relatable as an African raised by parents who live through South Africa’s colonisation and segregation. I need a copy

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

OBF 2025: Wamuwi Mbao interviews Siphokazi Jonas (Weeping Becomes a River)
Q: Would you give us just a top line, no spoilers, of what is actually going on in the story? What is your narrative about?
The narrative follows a strange girl born under mysterious circumstances who must leave her world, navigate between different realms, and undergo a transformative journey that remains unsettled and not strictly resolved, highlighting the in-between state of her journey.
OBF 2025: Wamuwi Mbao interviews Siphokazi Jonas (Weeping Becomes a River)
Q: But I'm someone who's always intrigued by the idea of fusion, but also tension between forms. What was the appeal for you of creating a collection that plays with these different forms of storytelling?
I was drawn to fusion and tension between forms because it allows poetry to venture into stage, film, and other narrative modes, and it felt inevitable to let different forms contend for space while honoring insormi, a traditional South African storytelling form.
Pagecast at Kingsmead Book Fair: Karabo Poppy
Q: What excites you about the South African publishing industry today?
She highlights Jonathan Ball Publishers' 50th anniversary as a sign of pushing boundaries and supporting unconventional, locally rooted storytelling, which inspires her and aligns with her goals for more African authors and illustrators.
Pagecast at Kingsmead Book Fair: Karabo Poppy
Q: How did you develop your distinctive illustration aesthetic?
Karabo describes the evolution of her style as organic, likened to handwriting, with influences from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and barber signage, and a pivotal shift from medicine to art after a teacher encouraged her unique talent.
Pagecast at the Kingsmead Book Fair: Sally Andrew
Q: Can you tell us a bit about what inspired that whole concept?
Sally explains that Tannie Maria is an agony aunt who solves murders with a mix of common-sense advice and recipes, set against the backdrop of the Karoo and environmental and social themes that shape the mysteries.
