Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The surgeon, the innovator, and teacher- Dr Larry M Wolford
Q: Can you give our audience a glimpse into your pathway from growing up in Pittsburgh and your pathway to Baylor?
I grew up on a horse farm near Johnstown, with a family background in medicine; I bounced around during education, worked hard, and eventually found a path that led me to oral surgery through a combination of opportunities in the ER, Navy deferments, and mentors who saw potential in me, which opened the door to Parkland and Baylor.
The Miami Project- Dr Robert E Marx
Q: What were some pivotal innovations that emerged from The Miami Project?
Key innovations include the development of tissue engineering protocols (BMP-based bone regeneration), the push toward in situ tissue engineering, advances in microvascular and nerve reconstruction, remote dental implants, and a philosophy that surgery should be complemented by solid research and clinical protocols, leading to widespread adoption in training programs and practice.
Dr Michael Miloro- A master Microneurosurgeon and Educator in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Q: How has the era of AI influenced scholarly publishing and how should clinicians approach AI in research?
AI can speed up reviews and data processing, but it must be used with a clear clinical question and human oversight; it should enhance, not replace, critical thinking and ethical disclosure.
Dr Myron Tucker - A true icon in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Q: What are your thoughts on the four-year vs six-year residency debate and research time?
The debate centers on how much time is available for comprehensive clinical training versus research. A four-year program can carve out time for research, while a six-year program often burdens residents with less opportunity for scholarly activity unless structured to include fellowships or research time.
Dr Myron Tucker - A true icon in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Q: Can you give our audience a brief snapshot on your pathway to UNC and then into private practice?
I grew up in Denver, pursued gymnastics on a scholarship, went to Baylor for dental school, served in the Navy as a General Dentist, then trained in Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery at UNC, before transitioning to private practice and academic collaboration with partners to build a premier OMS program.
