'이태원 참사' 당일 현장에는 얼마나 많은 사람들이 몰렸을까요? 또 언제부터 사고 위험이 시작된 것일까요? 뉴스타파가 국립금오공대 박준영 교수와 함께 시뮬레이션해본 결과, 800명 이상의 사람이 골목길에 몰린 시점부터 압사 사고 위험이 시작되는 것으로 드러났습니다. 단 골목길을 일방통행으로 통제했을 경우에는 인파가 1000명에 육박해도 사고 위험이 거의 없었습니다.
박희영 용산구청장이 구의원 시절 이태원에 위치한 가족 소유 부동산 앞 도로를 정비해달라고 여러 차례 요구했던 것이 밝혀졌습니다. 이 부동산은 이태원 참사 현장 인근에 위치한 곳으로, 이태원에서 열리는 축제의 수혜를 그대로 입는 곳이었습니다. 명백한 이해충돌성 발언을 일삼으며 가족 소유 부동산을 챙겼던 박희영 구청장은, 정작 참사 이후 '구청에서 할 역할은 다 했다' 라며 책임을 회피하는 모습을 보였습니다.
이태원 참사 당일 용산구청이 시민들의 무질서를 지적하는 뉴스 프로그램을 제작하려 했던 사실이 드러났습니다. 뉴스타파가 입수한 공문서에 따르면 용산구는 '핼러윈데이 시민의식 부재 현장'을 지적하기 위해 SBS와 함께 뉴스 프로그램을 기획했던 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 박희영 용산구청장은 참사 다음날 "핼러윈 축제는 하나의 현상이며 구청이 할 역할은 다했다"며 용산구청의 책임을 부인한 바 있습니다.
