武则天(624年-705年）是中国历史上唯一一位女皇帝，尊为武周圣神皇帝。本名武媚娘，即位后改名武曌（zhào），取意“日月当空”（有另一种写法，瞾，取其“双目当空”之意）。并州文水人（今山西文水）她的国号为周，不是唐。
武则天，是一个颇具历史魅力的名字，是一个似传奇而非传奇的历史名人。她是唐王朝开国功勋武士镬之次女，千古名帝唐太宗之嫔妾，高宗李治之皇后。她在佐执朝政30年后，亲临帝位，自封“圣神皇帝”，废唐祚于一旦，改国号为周，成为中国封建史上空前绝后的唯一女皇帝。她从参与朝政，自称皇帝，到病移上阳宫，前后执政近半个世纪；她上承“贞观之治”，下启“开元盛世”，历史功绩，昭然史册，诚如宋庆龄先生客观之评价：“封建时代杰出的女政治家”。
