Episode 62: Derek Hall
Q: How did you get started with the Nordic Spitz and related breeds, and what have you learned about sourcing dogs?
Derek discusses moving from Alaska to the lower 48, exposure to crossbreeds, the challenges of finding trustworthy sources, and the importance of trials and verifiable lineage.
Episode 62: Derek Hall
Q: What got you into hunting and hunting with dogs?
Derek explains he grew up in a family that hunted with dogs on chains, developing a preference for faster dogs and a love for running dogs, which led to his current crossbreeds and hunting style.
Episode 60: Thomas Cole — Colemine Kennels
Q: Do you try to build your dogs with different roles or has it just happened?
There is a master plan: I aim for a lineup where some dogs are bigger and grittier for baying and tracking, while others bring speed by crossing to a mountain cur, to create a balanced team.
Episode 60: Thomas Cole — Colemine Kennels
Q: What dogs do you currently have that you use on bears?
A mix: two start dogs Alpha and Cage from a litter, a female Liberty from that line, and a younger dogs Calypso, plus an older camphouse bred plot; combination of plot-walker crosses aimed at balance of grit and speed.
Episode 60: Thomas Cole — Colemine Kennels
Q: You didn't grow up hunting, so you started hunting late. How was it to be immersed into the hunting world in the States at a later age?
It was difficult in some aspects, but the family support plus mentorship helped me learn quickly; I focused first on deer and bow hunting, then turkey, and the passion grew from there.
