仕事を優先し、クリスマス目前に彼女に振られてしまった男。いつも聴いている深夜ラジオでは、気さくな距離感でDJがリスナーからのメッセージを読み上げている。一方その頃、高速道路を使って函館に向かう一人の女。旅を楽しみながらも、クリスマス一色の景色の中で込み上げてくるのは、やはり寂しさだった。ホテルで朝食を済ませ、赤レンガ倉庫の巨大ツリーを眺めていると・・・
2021年も残りあとわずか。年末の大掃除をしていた私は机の引き出しから封筒の束を見つける。消印のないその手紙には、甘酸っぱい26年前の思い出が詰まっている。一通目は1995年10月30日、道東初の高速道路が開通した日だ。差出人の幼馴染は池田町から、私の住む清水町まで直接手紙を届けに来たのだった。
ふとした瞬間に思い出す「忘れられない人たち」がいる。私にとって洞爺湖のホテルの支配人と女将さんはそうした存在だ。2000年、有珠山噴火によって洞爺湖畔を中心とした広い地域が甚大な被害を受けた。そんな状況をニュースで見た私は、落ち着いたら洞爺湖温泉に行くことを決意する。懸命な復旧作業により、噴火から15か月で道央道は全線復旧。洞爺湖へ旅行に訪れた私は、到着したホテルで温かい歓迎に感動して以来、そのホテルの常連となったのだった。
