Q: How did you come up with the idea for the book or the idea to even write a fictionalized story?

Alice Lovejoy, "Tales of Militant Chemistry" (U California Press, 2025)
Q: So can you talk a little bit about like, how, I mean, this is like sort of the major part of the book, but can you talk, share, you know, some of the things about how, because of the wars, because of both World War I and World War II, and then we can get into after that, they were able to continue on and do things besides just make motion picture film?
War significantly accelerated Kodak's involvement in the production of materials used by the military, such as safety films for aircraft and organic chemicals for warfare, allowing them to expand their business.
Alice Lovejoy, "Tales of Militant Chemistry" (U California Press, 2025)
Q: Can you talk a little bit about that, like how this was also a way to get around being told that they cannot be a monopoly?
Kodak's strategy of diversifying its business allowed it to navigate antitrust regulations while expanding its influence in the market.
Alice Lovejoy, "Tales of Militant Chemistry" (U California Press, 2025)
Q: Can you talk a little bit about kind of sort of setting the stage for all of the elements or all of the pieces to make film that allow this industry or the film industry to be able to diversify themselves and to do more than just make what we remember, what we know as film?
There are two basic layers of film: the base made from plant cellulose, and the emulsion that makes film photosensitive. The diversification of materials involved in film manufacturing highlights the complexities of the film industry.
