  • Great podcast, poor audio

In depth and assumes some knowledge. Focuses on generally interesting issues associated with the brain. Deeper science vs most pop sci podcasts.

  • Great podcast, audio sometimes poor

The discussions in this podcast contain a lot of interesting info, and the material is not "watered down" for popular consumption. However, the audio sometimes isn't very good, such as when a speaker is too far from the microphone.

  • Really Great Tool

It requires some knowledge, and sometimes there are sound problems, but it's a unique, useful podcast for learning more about particular neuroscience topics!

  • Great discussions

For someone interested in learning more about neuroscience, listening to neuroscientists discuss topics in an informal context gives you a different angle of learning. Much looser than your usual interview podcast, these discussions are always interesting, particularly if you already know something about the subject. My only criticism is that the audio is often too low.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 329 - Daniel Llano, MD, PhD
Q: What role do two-photon imaging and newer techniques play in advancing our understanding of IC circuitry?
Two-photon imaging enables visualization of surface tonotopy and functional circuits in awake animals, which accelerates mapping of inputs, outputs, and cell-type-specific connectivity in the IC.
Episode 329 - Daniel Llano, MD, PhD
Q: Is there a true spatial map in the IC for locating sounds, or is localization achieved without a simple map?
There is no universally accepted reproducible map of auditory space in the IC; instead, spatial processing may rely on complex integration across multiple maps and neural populations, rather than a single coherent space map.
Episode 329 - Daniel Llano, MD, PhD
Q: Could you start by opening the box of the inferior colliculus and tell us what the different pieces are and what's in there?
The IC can be described as three main subdivisions (central nucleus and two non-laminar divisions, lateral and dorsal cortex) with a rich, but not fully understood, internal structure; researchers are delineating borders and cell types and recognizing complex connectivity including descending inputs.
Episode 330 - Marcelo Marucho, PhD
Q: Can you describe the patch-clamp experiments near microtubules and what was observed?
Experiments showed oscillating ionic currents when microtubules were probed close to their vicinity, a behavior not seen in actin filaments, suggesting a unique transport mechanism linked to microtubule hollow interior and nanopores.
Episode 327 - Se-Woong Park, PhD
Q: Could you give us a little review of what's known about prediction and autism spectrum disorder?
The guest outlines a framework where prediction is a key brain function that may unify various autistic traits, and then describes experimental approaches to dissect whether predictions are driven by motor plans, sensory input, or integration between the two.
