  • Great podcast, poor audio

In depth and assumes some knowledge. Focuses on generally interesting issues associated with the brain. Deeper science vs most pop sci podcasts.

  • Great podcast, audio sometimes poor

The discussions in this podcast contain a lot of interesting info, and the material is not "watered down" for popular consumption. However, the audio sometimes isn't very good, such as when a speaker is too far from the microphone.

  • Really Great Tool

It requires some knowledge, and sometimes there are sound problems, but it's a unique, useful podcast for learning more about particular neuroscience topics!

  • Great discussions

For someone interested in learning more about neuroscience, listening to neuroscientists discuss topics in an informal context gives you a different angle of learning. Much looser than your usual interview podcast, these discussions are always interesting, particularly if you already know something about the subject. My only criticism is that the audio is often too low.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 311 - Michael Roberts, PhD
Q: Could you give us some big picture on the auditory system and where the inferior colliculus gets in?
The inferior colliculus serves as a hub in the auditory pathway where sound information is converged and processed before being relayed to higher auditory centers.
Episode 308 - Punam Pokam, PhD
Q: What do we think is causing that reduction in excitability?
Punam suggested that swelling increases membrane capacitance, which reduces input resistance in neurons making them less excitable overall despite the increased size and number of receptors.
Episode 308 - Punam Pokam, PhD
Q: Could you start by explaining the cellular mechanisms that control cell volume and the movement of water across cell membranes?
Punam explained that after traumatic brain injury, neurons and glial cells swell, which continues for days. The swelling relates to alterations in transporters that control ion and water movement, specifically sodium and potassium conductances.
Episode 302 - Katya Likhtic, PhD
Q: Would you consider the amygdala to be a core area that could model relevant aspects of post-traumatic stress disorder?
I think it's a combination of amygdala function and amygdala communication with other structures.
Episode 298 - Claudo Punzo, PhD
Q: How often can you do it before it's just not going to work anymore?
We hope that the RNA interference we are using can work for a long time, potentially for the patient's lifetime, at regular intervals.
