  • Unique!

The hosts are passionate and knowledgeable. One knew the director of the film and shared her insights into it based on conversations. They use research to bolster their opinions, and running all this through how the capital C church saw these films at the time is just a delight!

  • Just what the exorcist ordered

As a recovering ex evangelical, who also worked in film, I enjoy this conversation with two quite ethical host, calling out abusers and systems of oppression. This call, particularly to men to do better is a welcome point of view in the larger conversation on media

  • Hilarious, brilliant, unpretentious, absorbing, this podcast lives at the intersection of movies and the history of "morality." You don't have to have seen the movie. You don't have to be Catholic. What might SEEM like a niche subject, they make fascinating and fun for anyone. You'll laugh, and you might learn a little too (but you don't have to!) The podcasters are excellent. Movie choices are great: some famous, some now obscure.

Production values are also on point: it sounds great!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) – Part 2: Rock Me, Sexy Jesus | Filthy Habits
Q: What made the production choose an abstract desert setting and non-traditional staging for the Last Supper and other key scenes?
The hosts explain that the abstract, desert framing and scaffolding allow the musical to focus on emotion and character dynamics rather than literal historical accuracy, creating a timeless, operatic feel that aligns with the music-driven storytelling.
Benedetta (2021) Part I: Vocation, Rejection, & Speaking in Tongues (ft. Veronica Novotny, Leave Laugh Love) | Filthy Habits
Q: Veronica, how do you connect Benedetta's experiences with your own background in Catholicism?
Veronica explains that Benedetta's visions and charisma resonate with her experiences in conservative Catholic communities, while also highlighting the tension between genuine belief and performative display, which informs her nuanced review of the film.
X-Rated: A Clockwork Orange w/John Enroth (Regular Show, Time Bandits)
Q: How does Kubrick's approach to violence affect the audience's perception of Alex?
The guests suggest that Kubrick's clinical, documentary-like approach and the way the audience is asked to identify with Alex creates a complicated moral experience where sympathy coexists with horror, making the film's critique of power and control more impactful.
Black Narcissus (1947) – Part 1: Technicolor Nunsploitation in the Himalayas | Filthy Habits
Q: What is the purpose of making a film about nuns in the Himalayas?
The discussion frames it as a vehicle to examine women's stories, power dynamics, and the tension between spiritual vows and personal desires, using the remote setting to explore how environments shape and reveal character psyches.
