赖尾随其后，潜入院中，趴在窗下，偷听他们的谈话。那无赖一面威胁要去报告官府，一面用淫秽语言调戏方氏。鸿渐气忿之极，破门而出，将无赖砍死，然后到官府自首。在解往都城的路上，狐仙又救了他。后来张鸿渐的儿子中了举人，官司也了结了，父子夫妻得以团圆。
