Phosphorus availability varies by gyre. Some regions, like the North Atlantic, are phosphorus-limited, whereas others, like the North Pacific, are less so. In the Indian Ocean, data are more sparse, but climatological evidence suggests relatively limited phosphorus and iron in some subregions, implying that the balance of these nutrients will control fixation activity depending on local subregions and seasonal changes.

Q: Is there consensus on the best method to measure nitrogen fixation rates in the ocean?
Yes, the community converged on a bubble-release method as the best compromise: inject a large bubble, shake to promote equilibration, then release the bubble and incubate with the gas tightly sealed so the 15N remains stable and doesn't continue dissolving. The method combines accuracy with practicality across different sample types, though the choice still depends on the specific experimental context, such as particle-associated fixation.

Q: And the issue back then was that there were two different approaches to measure nitrogen fixation. Can you introduce what the two methods are?
The two classic approaches were the bubble (gas injection) method and the dissolved (gas dissolution) method. Each has pros and cons: the bubble method can overestimate or underestimate depending on how quickly the gas equilibrates, while the dissolved method avoids bubbles but can dilute the sample and reduce enrichment, especially for high-rate systems. A consensus later favored a bubble-release approach that uses a large injected bubble, promotes controlled equilibration, and gas-tight incubation to keep enrichment stable.
