  • Shahnameh

I love the style of this conversational podcast. After a break, I’m so pleased to see it’s still going AND with 3 episodes on Shahnameh, which I’ve just about finished reading (well, a translation by Dick Davis). Maybe one day I can read it in Farsi! Fantastic podcast, keep up the good work

  • Great podcast

Well-paced. Enjoying it as the spouse of an Iranian who has learned a lot of conversational Farsi, but who is still missing a lot. This podcast is great because it starts from the beginning and is helping shore up the holes in my Farsi foundation. Would enjoy more grammar lessons, but perhaps those are coming. I’m only on Lesson 15 😉

Q: How did Rahmanian first encounter Shahnameh and decide to center his work around it?
He learned about Shahnameh after a successful career in Iran and the realization that its stories and visual legends could be made accessible to Western audiences; he pivoted from traditional art to a project that combined illustration, animation, and performance to reach everyday people.
Culture | Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, The Story of Zahhak, Part 4
Q: What are my roots?
Fereydoon learns from his mother that his father was Optin and that Zahhak killed him, leading to his hidden upbringing and eventual quest to reclaim Iran.
Culture | Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, On the Creation of the World, Part 2
Q: Is there anything else you want to say just about everything that we've covered so far?
No, I think we're good. Just looking forward to continuing and seeing how the rest of it comes about.
Culture | Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, On the Creation of the World, Part 1
Q: Why is the Shahnameh important?
It gathers ancestral wisdom and explores timeless human concerns through mythology.
Interview | Growing Up Irooni - Nilo Tabrizy on the Cost of Telling Iran’s Story
Q: What do you think was different between 2019 and 2022 regarding the protests?
The inciting moment in 2022 was particularly potent because it involved a clear violation of personal dignity—a woman losing her life due to police brutality, sparking outrage and connecting the public on a fundamental level.
