母方の実家が本屋さんだったにもかかわらず、
子どもの頃のスーさんはむしろテレビっ子。
初めて本に夢中になったのは、小学校3〜4年生で読んだ「名犬ラッシー」や「狼ロボ」でした。
「迎合せずに我が道をいく」生き方に影響を受けるなど、当時から本はスーさんにとって生き方を教えてくれるものだったようです。

きっかけは、知的障害のある長男のことで精神科を訪れた際、先生から「お母さんのほうが心配だよ」と声をかけられたこと。それまで自分のことは後回しにしてきたはなちゃんは、ある支援者の方の「お母さんはどんなに頑張っても誰も褒めてくれないよね」という一言に出会い、少しずつ自分を労うことを覚えていったそうです。
