万有理论是科学家梦寐以求的一种终极理论，而且人类对此的追求，已经延续了几千年。原始民族大多流传着各种神话和传说，试图解释世界运行的规律。宗教以外，当然还有科学或哲学。例如，古希腊的哲学家就尝试运用几条基本公理，推导出世界上各种现象背后的原理。十七世纪的牛顿力学，也是运用数学和实验推导出来的一套既简单而又能够解释物体运动原理的理论。

标准模型是粒子物理学的核心理论。但是标准模型的最大缺陷，就是没有考虑到万有引力。宇宙里面有四种基本力，分别是强力、弱力、电磁力、万有引力。其中前面三种力都出现在微观尺度，可以用量子力学中的标准模型来解释，而万有引力则可以用爱因斯坦的相对论来解释。
一般来说，量子力学和相对论通常都可以二择其一。可是，宇宙中真的有些情况，是量子力学和相对论都无能为力的，例如是在黑洞的中心，或者在宇宙大爆炸不久，因为这些都是微观尺度，量子效应很明显，同时万有引力又大到不能忽略不计。

巨型强子对撞机 (LHC) 是人类历史上能量最大的粒子加速器，建造成本达到48亿美元，每年的营运开支也达到10亿美元。这台机器2008年9月10日开始运作，在过去的11年间进行了很多大大小小的实验。其中最重要的成果之一，就是发现希格斯玻色子 (Higgs boson)，也就是大名鼎鼎的「上帝粒子」。
