《未来科学家》是《科学在身边》系列里面，由张浩然博士主讲的第二个专题。科学，是研究宇宙规律的学问。宇宙浩瀚，在宇宙的尺度里面，人类连一粒微尘都不如。但偏偏是这个卑微的物种，竟然会去探究宇宙的终极规律。科学家的这份智慧、这份魄力、这份勇气，实在令人肃然起敬。

霍金的学术成就有两个主要方面：科研与科普。
霍金的主要研究是属于宇宙论的范围。物理学家毕生追求的，就是回答宇宙从哪里来、宇宙将往何处去这两个基本问题。霍金研究宇宙，也是要回答这两个问题。而他的切入点，就是黑洞和宇宙大爆炸理论。至于霍金的科普事业，则开始于1982年。当时他希望写一本畅销书，向公众解释科学家到目前为止对宇宙有多少理解。霍金希望这本书可以传播给尽可能多的人，因此尽量写得深入浅出，写出来的这本书就是著名的《时间简史》。之后，霍金还写了《黑洞和婴儿宇宙》、《果壳中的宇宙》、《大设计》、《... more
1963年，霍金确诊了一种运动神经元疾病，俗称渐冻人症。当时霍金才21岁，刚刚展开了他在剑桥大学的研究生涯，前途无可限量。就在他踌躇满志，正在选定博士研究题目的时候，却患上这种罕见的疾病。当时医生估计，霍金剩下来日子大概只有两年左右。而且在这两年里面，霍金的状况还会继续恶化。不单行动越来越笨拙，说话也会越来越困难，最后就连呼吸、心跳这些维持生命的基本功能都会慢慢停止，病人就会死亡。

很多成名的科学家都在他们年幼的时候就展现出过人的才华，学习成绩也非常好。但霍金似乎是一个例外。按照霍金在自传里面的描述，受到父亲的熏陶，他自幼就充满好奇心，也很喜欢科学，喜欢研究事物运行的原理。但是这些好奇心与兴趣主要是体现在玩乐方面。相反，霍金在学校里面的成绩不算太好。虽然他在中学的时候被分配到A组，也就是所谓的精英班，但是霍金在精英班里面的成绩只是中下游水平。不要说名列前茅，就连名列前面一半都没有试过。在第一个学年结束的时候，他还差点因为成绩不达标，而被踢到B组去。
