Immanuel Kant wird 1724 in Königsberg als Sohn eines Sattlers geboren. Die Verhältnisse sind bescheiden. Der Ehrgeiz, es im Leben und in der Philosophie zu etwas zu bringen, hat ihn allerdings schon früh gepackt.
Im Jahre 1783 lädt die Berlinische Monatsschrift dazu ein, die Frage "Was ist Aufklärung?" zu beantworten. Auch der Philosophie-Professor Immanuel Kant beteiligt sich und erfindet dabei den Slogan einer ganzen Epoche.
Im 18. Jahrhundert streiten die Philosophen, was wichtiger ist, um zu sicheren Erkenntnissen zu gelangen: Die Vernunft oder die Sinneseindrücke. Darüber schreibt Kant 10 lange Jahre sein vielleicht wichtigstes Buch.
In Kants prägenden Jahren, der Rokoko-Epoche, wurde viel auf feine Manieren, kultiviertes Plaudern & schöne Dinge gegeben. So mag es am Zeitgeist liegen, dass er sich über Geschmacksfragen grundlegende Gedanken macht.
Wie soll man sich anderen gegenüber verhalten? Manche folgen bei ethischen Fragen religiösen Vorgaben, andere verlassen sich aufs Gefühl. Kant aber fragt nach einem moralischen Gebot, das sich aus der Vernunft ergibt.
"Der Mensch ist frei, und überall liegt er in Ketten!", schreibt Kants Lieblingsschriftseller Rousseau. Und dann fragt Kant weiter: Ob sich Freiheit begründen lässt, worin sie besteht und was aus ihr folgt?
Zwei große Kriege erschütterten Europa zu Kants Lebzeiten. Der 7-jährige Krieg (1756–1763) und der Konflikt nach der Französischen Revolution, ab 1792. Kant fragt, was passieren müsste, damit dauerhaft Frieden herrscht.
