國軍精銳自1937年08月開打的淞滬會戰以來，時間來到12月上旬經歷了南京保衛戰已面臨人力物資嚴重耗損、戰力損失嚴重的局面；12月11日至13日期間，南京守軍指揮官唐生智決定開始撤離，但卻因為荒腔走板的撤離計畫，使得南京城陷入混亂。不僅是在挹江門發生國軍自相殘殺、互相踩踏的憾事，就連唐生智也在撤退行動的過程中狼狽出逃；期間還有廣東部隊英勇突圍的事蹟，也有發生後來日軍進城後對平民或軍人屠殺虐待的慘劇。
