The genial Martyn Darkly & enigmatic Gentleman Joe, occasionally with the help of guest reviewers, offer their thoughts on movies they've not seen in some time. After attempts to recall facts about the movies (accurate as often as they are not), they watch the film and then return to discuss it. They do not allow digression after digression to stand in the way of their admirable goal, even as their stamina is frequently challenged by the quality of movie lobbed at them via suggestions from their... more
An absolute gem that deserves to be more widely appreciated. I was looking for a film review podcast when I stumbled upon Martin and Joe by accident. Being an ‘I know what I like’ type of guy when it came to films I was after advice on watching something different………enter ISTYA. Several binge sessions later and the chaps had imparted not only their celluloid wisdom but so, so much more. Want an example of what I mean? Well, you’ve got a back catalogue of over 350 episodes to choose from, but you... more
This podcast is like a Rocky training sequence for writers, and in fact, I listen to it when I go for a run. It helps you to keep your mind on storytelling and their discussions help you think about your own story. You don’t need to watch the movies they discuss which is a big plus as well. When I was shopping for a movie podcast in the end of 2020, I listened to their Cobra review and they said something like “I don’t feel well today, this might have affected my opinion” and I thought “these gu... more
Not too overlong, this podcast has two guys - one of whom has a very infectious laugh - talking about what they remember about childhood films and then actually watching it again to discuss it in the present day. Enjoyable.
These guys are really funny and have interesting commentary on the films they review. It’s really worth your time and if you’re an American like me, let me assure you that THIS is that British humor you always hear so much about.

Two witty, memory-driven film conversations that revisit well-known and obscure titles from decades past. The hosts compare what they remember with what they watch now, often unpacking nostalgia, memory bias, and the cultural context around each selection. The show tends to favor light, humorous banter, sharp observations about cinema history, and episodes that mix personal anecdotes with thoughtful critique. A standout trait is the duo's chemistry and the playful, conversational editing that keeps discussions accessible even for listeners who haven't seen the film in question. The format also leans into a British sensibility and a consistent focus on older films, which may appeal to nostalgic movie lovers and casual cinephiles alike.
