  • Excellent book discussion podcast

This was the first Hugo-related podcast I found, and I’ve been a supporter ever since. Seth does a great job having a variety of guests on to discuss books new and old. Seth is such a thoughtful guy that I enjoy listening even for books I haven’t/won’t read.

Even more impressive is how he’s brought together folks from other podcasts for group discussions of award nominees and such. Through this podcast, I’ve found several other great ones to listen to.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Foundational Fantasy: Magician, by Raymond E. Feist, with guest James Ralston
Q: What makes this book foundational within the Rift War Saga for you?
James explains that the novel establishes core elements—a dual-world setting, a coming-of-age protagonist, and a blend of military history with magic—that shape the entire saga and invite readers to explore a vast, interconnected universe in later installments.
Interview with Ray Jamison, author of The Madcaps (and a sprinkling of Foundational Fantasy)
Q: Why is fantasy important to you as a storytelling medium?
Fantasy is compelling because it distills life to simpler or exaggerated elements, allowing readers to relate through core human experiences and virtues—such as friendship and courage—without being overwhelmed by modern complexity, while still enabling epic stakes and memorable, archetypal journeys.
Interview with Ray Jamison, author of The Madcaps (and a sprinkling of Foundational Fantasy)
Q: How did you decide to enter the world of comics, and what does that process look like for you?
I always wanted to do comics, studied fundamentals in a teen program, and then paused due to life, only to return with a strong plan to ensure the story is complete and standalone, not a long-running monthly; I wanted three issues that could stand beside classic works in a comic shop and be a satisfying, self-contained experience.
Interview with Ray Jamison, author of The Madcaps (and a sprinkling of Foundational Fantasy)
Q: What is the project actually called, and what is The Madcaps about?
The project is The Madcaps, a three-issue mini-series set in Ivywood about four main characters who come together in a single night to confront an undead outbreak and a looming necromancer, with each character bringing a unique arc and set of powers that defy simple fantasy stereotypes.
Foundational Fantasy: Nine Princes in Amber, by Roger Zelazny, with guest Paul Weimer
Q: Who is the target audience for Nine Princes in Amber, and does it differ from today?
The target audience was mainly adult men in its era, but its multiverse and vibe-heavy storytelling can appeal to contemporary readers who enjoy complex intrigues, ongoing world-building, and a strong sense of partial realism within fantasy elements.
