李光耀执政时，决心要把新加坡打造成一个清洁与绿化的城市。他坚信，不论贫富，每个人都应该享有一个舒适的生活环境；如果无法让所有新加坡人都享有干净和绿化的环境，就无法贯彻平等社会的观念。
李光耀说：“今天，不论你是住在一房、二房、三房、四房或五房式组屋、执行共管公寓或有地住宅，环境都是干净的。你住的房屋并不平等，但你还是可以和每个人一样，享有干净的公共空间。”

当年，李光耀的福建话学得那么好，但却义无反顾地放弃福建话，并要求新加坡华人改用华语。
严孟达说：“他的福建话能够一夜之间放弃，这是一种勇气，一种大智慧。他看到远的地方，把福建话讲得再好，新的时代里面没有用了，所以他毅然放弃，继续把所有的精力放在学习华语上面。”
